National Broadband Ireland (NBI) is the company responsible for delivering the Irish Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), a major national infrastructure programme aimed at providing high-speed broadband connectivity across Ireland. NBI is deploying a wholesale, open-access fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to connect over 560,000 premises, including homes, businesses, farms, and public buildings.
As a wholesale network operator, NBI designs, builds, and operates critical telecommunications infrastructure, enabling retail service providers to deliver high-speed broadband services over its state-of-the-art fibre network. NBI’s activities encompass network planning, fibre deployment, digital infrastructure delivery, and ongoing network management and optimisation.
NBI collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders, including government bodies, local authorities, contractors, and technology providers, to deliver this complex infrastructure programme.
In addition to promoting digital connectivity and economic competitiveness from an Irish perspective, NBI is aligned with broader European digital connectivity objectives, contributing to the rollout of high-capacity networks and supporting the EU’s Gigabit Society targets. Its activities are therefore highly relevant to the FTTH Council Europe’s mission of accelerating fibre
